Microsoft is making password-free sign-ins easier for more Windows users. With a new Windows 11 update, desktop computers can now support fingerprint authentication, even if they weren’t originally built with a fingerprint scanner.
The feature arrives through update KB5101684, which is currently rolling out to devices running Windows 11 versions 24H2 and 25H2. Once installed, users can connect compatible external fingerprint readers and use Windows Hello to unlock their PCs with a fingerprint.
As reported by PCWorld, this update broadens the reach of Windows Hello by allowing biometric authentication on a wider range of Windows devices.
Windows Hello Now Supports External Fingerprint Readers
Previously, fingerprint sign-in was mostly limited to laptops and PCs equipped with integrated fingerprint sensors. Microsoft’s latest update removes that limitation by introducing support for external fingerprint readers that meet the company’s Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) requirements.
According to Microsoft, the new capability allows users to enjoy the same secure biometric login experience on desktop computers, Copilot+ PCs, and other Windows 11 systems without built-in fingerprint hardware.
The company stated:
“Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS) now supports external fingerprint sensors. This secure sign-in experience is now available on desktop PCs and other Windows 11 devices, including Copilot+ PCs, when paired with a supported ESS fingerprint reader.”
How to Enable Fingerprint Login
Getting started is straightforward for users with compatible hardware.
Simply connect an ESS-certified external fingerprint reader to your Windows 11 PC, then navigate to:
- Settings
- Accounts
- Sign-in options
From there, Windows will guide you through the fingerprint enrollment process, allowing you to use biometric authentication for future sign-ins.

Microsoft initially revealed plans for external fingerprint reader support earlier this year, but the feature has only now started reaching users through the latest Windows 11 updates.
