Samsung Electronics Enters Physical AI Race with New Robotics Division

The global race for physical AI is heating up, and Samsung Electronics has made a bold move by launching a dedicated robotics division aimed at accelerating the development of intelligent robots and AI-driven automation.

The newly established Robotics eXperience (RX) division will report directly to Samsung Electronics CEO Roh Tae-moon and will oversee the company’s long-term robotics strategy, research, product planning, software development, AI integration, and commercialization efforts.

Samsung’s goal is to bring all robotics-related activities under one division, allowing research, development, product planning, and business strategy teams to work together more efficiently. This integrated approach is expected to speed up the commercialization of physical AI technologies.

To strengthen its robotics capabilities, Samsung has assembled an experienced leadership team. Executive Vice President Lee Dong-kun, formerly with Boston Dynamics, will lead the Robotics Strategy Team. He will work alongside Professor Kim Hyoun-jin of Seoul National University, an expert in autonomous robotic systems, and Professor Kim Ui-kyum of Ajou University, who is widely recognized for his work in robotic hand technology.

The company also confirmed that it will continue recruiting specialists in robotics hardware, artificial intelligence, and software engineering to support its ambitious plans.

Samsung’s robotics headquarters will operate from its Seoul Research and Development campus, while a dedicated data factory will be established at its Gumi complex. This facility will collect and analyse manufacturing data to continuously train and improve robotic systems before they are deployed across production facilities.

Beyond South Korea, Samsung intends to operate research hubs in the United States, China, and Japan, enabling the company to tap into global talent and emerging technologies.

According to the announcement, Samsung will initially deploy its robotics technologies within manufacturing environments before gradually expanding into consumer products. The company plans to introduce humanoid robots into its domestic and international factories as part of its transition to AI-powered autonomous manufacturing by 2030.

Samsung’s extensive manufacturing network, which spans semiconductors, smartphones, home appliances, displays, batteries, electronic components, and shipbuilding, provides a unique environment for training and refining advanced robotics systems using real-world industrial data.

This latest development follows Samsung’s increased investment in robotics after becoming the largest shareholder of Rainbow Robotics in 2024. As stated by Hankyoreh, the creation of the RX division reflects Samsung’s determination to transform robotics from a research initiative into a major business sector that will strengthen its long-term manufacturing competitiveness.

With technology companies like Meta and Nvidia investing heavily in physical AI, Samsung’s latest move positions the company as another major contender in the future of intelligent machines and autonomous robotics.
