Samsung to Supply OLED Displays for Apple’s Next-Generation MacBook Pro

Apple’s long-awaited OLED MacBook Pro is reportedly moving closer to reality, and Samsung Display is expected to play a major role in making it happen.

According to a report from TheElec, Samsung Display has secured exclusive rights to manufacture OLED display panels for Apple’s next-generation 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models. The new laptops are widely expected to launch in late 2026 or early 2027.

If the report proves accurate, it would represent a significant shift from Apple’s traditional supply chain strategy. The company typically sources key components from multiple manufacturers to reduce production risks and maintain a flexible supply chain. However, this time Samsung appears to have emerged as the sole display supplier for the upcoming MacBook Pro lineup.

Samsung Display is reportedly preparing to manufacture approximately 2.5 million OLED panels to support Apple’s initial production plans. The new displays are also expected to introduce touchscreen functionality, marking what could be the first touchscreen MacBook Pro in Apple’s history.

As reported by TheElec, Samsung earned the exclusive supply agreement after working closely with Apple during the early stages of the OLED panel’s development. Rather than simply competing for the manufacturing contract, Samsung reportedly collaborated on the display specifications and production process, giving it a significant advantage over competing suppliers.

The report also states that Apple evaluated proposals from both Samsung Display and LG Display for large OLED panel production. Samsung recommended using its advanced 8.6-generation OLED manufacturing line, while LG proposed production using its sixth-generation facilities.

Samsung’s newer manufacturing process was reportedly considered more efficient and better suited for Apple’s expected production volume of around 2.5 million units, ultimately making it the preferred supplier.

Although LG Display may miss out on the first OLED MacBook Pro production cycle, it is expected to continue supplying LCD panels for existing MacBook Pro models and OLED displays for the iPad Pro. Reports suggest LG could eventually join Apple’s OLED MacBook Pro supply chain, but not before 2029.

The supplier update further strengthens speculation that Apple is preparing one of the biggest MacBook Pro redesigns in years. In addition to OLED display technology, previous reports have pointed to a slimmer chassis, touchscreen support, improved battery efficiency, and next-generation Apple Silicon chips powering the refreshed laptops.

For Apple users, the move to OLED technology could bring several advantages, including deeper blacks, richer colours, higher contrast, improved energy efficiency, and an overall better viewing experience compared to the current mini-LED displays.

If these reports become reality, Samsung Display will play a central role in one of Apple’s most anticipated hardware releases, while the OLED MacBook Pro could mark the beginning of a new era for Apple’s premium laptop lineup.
